Periodic Law
The periodic law states that the properties of elements recur in a repeating pattern when arranged according to increasing atomic number.
Electron Configuration
The arrangement of electrons in an atom which can be represented in shorthand using the nearest noble gas.
Valence Electrons
The outermost electrons of an atom that are involved in chemical reactions.
Ionization Energy
The amount of energy required to remove an electron from an atom in the gaseous state.
Atomic Radius
The size of an atom, which decreases from left to right across a period and increases from top to bottom in a group.
Alkali Metals
The elements in Group IA/1, known for having one valence electron and being highly reactive.
Noble Gases
The inert gases in Group VIIIA/18 that have complete valence electron shells.
Ionic Charge
The charge on an ion, which is determined by the number of valence electrons lost or gained.
Isoelectronic Series
Atoms or ions that have the same electron configuration.
Electron Dot Formula
A representation of an atom showing its valence electrons as dots around the element's symbol.
