Biological Functions

Functions a cell must perform to stay alive, which include bringing in nutrients and water, obtaining energy, and getting rid of wastes.

Microscope

An instrument that makes small objects look larger.

Light Microscope

A simple microscope that focuses light through lenses to produce a magnified image.

Electron Microscope

A more complex microscope that creates an image using beams of electrons that scan the surface of the specimen, providing images with great resolution and high magnification.

Magnification

A property of a microscope that makes things look bigger than their actual size.

Resolution

A property of a microscope that makes things clearer and more detailed than they formally were.

Resolution and Magnification Relationship in Light Microscopes

In general, for light microscopes, resolution improves as magnification increases.
