What is assimilation
process where an immigrant group participates fully in their new country and loses trace of their previous unique culture.
What is remittances?
a transfer of money from a foreign worker to an individual in their home country. Money sent home by migrants competes with international aid as one of the largest financial inflows to developing countries.
What is intra-regional migration?
migration WITHIN the same region. e.g. movement of people within the EU.
What is a refugee?
An individual who flees their country for fear of persecution.
What are asylum seekers?
People who seek a permanent settlement in their host country by claiming refugee status BUT their status is NOT determined.
What is integration?
Where an immigrant group participates widely in the host society while maintaining aspects of their own cultural identity.
What is chain migration?
Where migrants from one country are encouraged to emigrate by info from those who have already made the journey out of the country.
What is south- south migration?
movement of people from developing countries to other developing countries
What is inter region migration?
movement of people between different regions. e.g. Africa to Europe.
