A problem can still have the same result even if you move around the placement/order of it
Associative Property (of addition and multiplication)
A problem can still have the same result even if you move what’s inside the parentheses versus outside it
Identity property of addition
You can add 0 to any number but it will still have the same value
Identity Property of multiplication
You can multiply any number times 1 and that number will still have the same value
Additive Inverse
Anything plus it’s negative opposite will equal zero
Multiplicative Inverse
Anything times its reciprocal is equal to 1 (except zero)
Distributive Property (of multiplication with respect to addition)
When multiplying fractions the numbers outside the parentheses is multiplied with every number inside the parentheses
Word problems
rewrite words with numbers and symbols
use parentheses
sum = addition
difference = subtraction
product = multiplication
Quotient = dividing
Increased = addition
Decreased = subtraction
Is = equal
And = adddition
Less than = add (in order)
More than = subtract (in order)
