Sports Medicine
A field that uses a holistic, comprehensive, and multidisciplinary approach to health care for those engaged in sporting or recreational activity.
Athletic Health Care Team
A comprehensive team approach typically including certified athletic trainers, team physicians, EMS personnel, coaches, school nurses, and medical specialists.
BOC Certified Athletic Trainer
An allied health care professional trained in injury prevention, recognition, evaluation, immediate care, treatment, rehabilitation, health care organization, and professional responsibility.
Sports Injury
Occurs as a result of participation in organized intercollegiate practice or game and requires medical attention, resulting in time lost for the athlete.
Chronic/Overuse Injuries
Injuries caused by intrinsic factors like immature cartilage and poor conditioning, and extrinsic factors such as excessive training and incorrect technique.
Soft Tissue Injuries
Injuries affecting muscles, ligaments, tendons, and other soft tissues, categorized into sprains, strains, contusions, and cartilage tears.
Fractures
Breaks or cracks in a bone, which may be classified as closed or open, with symptoms including swelling, deformity, and pain.
Stress Fractures
Injuries resulting from prolonged overload of force applied to bone, often appearing with localized pain, tenderness, and slow onset.
Acute Injury
An injury that occurs suddenly during activity.
Chronic Injury
An injury that develops gradually over time due to repetitive stress.
