What are the different papillae of the tongue?
Vallate papilla
is a upside down V shaped formation in the back of the tonguw (posterior)
Foliate papilla
is a folded like tissue on the lateral surfaces of the tongue (sides)
Fungiform papilla
Is more rounded tissues, red in color
need to be maintained to prevent overgrowth
have taste buds
Filiform papilla
the longer thread like tisue
provide the sense of touch
Where are taste buds present?
In the FUNGIFORM and VALLATE papillae
What are the functions of saliva?
Lubrication
protection

What is a salivary gland?
is an exocrine gland that secretes saliva into the oral cavity
What is a duct?
a pasageway from the sailvary gland to the destination (oral cavity) of the secretions

is the second largest
Is beneath the mandible and tucked into the submandibular fossa
Is posterior to the sublingual gland
Produces 60-65% fo saliva (large producer of saliva)
Dumps into the mouth via the WHARTON'S DUCT which ends in the SUBLINGUAL CARNICLES

Is the smallest
Is underneath the tongue in the anterior poriton
Produces 10% of saliva
Dumps into the mouth via the BARTHOLIN'S DUCT along the SUBLINGUAL FOLD
How do minor salivary glands compare to the majot salivary glands?
There are numerous of them, smaller, and scattered all thorughout the mouth
They ensure tha the mouth is kept moist
