Ionic Bonding
The way metals bond to non-metals through the transfer of electrons.
Ions
Atoms that have either donated (metals) or received (non-metals) electrons to form a charged particle.
Metals in Ionic Bonding
Atoms donate electrons to non-metals, forming positive ions.
Non-metals in Ionic Bonding
Atoms receive electrons from metals, forming negative ions.
Dot and Cross Diagram
Diagram representing ionic bonding, showing electron transfer between atoms, metals end up with an empty outer shell.
Sodium Chloride (NaCl) Formation
Sodium atom gives up its outer electron becoming Na+ ion, and chloride atom picks up the electron, becoming Cl- (chloride) ion.
Sodium Ion (Na+)
Formed when a sodium atom (2,8,1) loses an electron to become a sodium ion (2,8).
Chloride Ion (Cl-)
Formed when a chlorine atom (2,8,7) gains an electron to become a chloride ion (2,8,8).
