Contusion
Bruise
Hematoma
Larger contusion, fluid or blood that pools within a tissue space, compartment, or organ
Laceration
Injury that results from a tear in the skin
Abrasion
Layers of skin that are torn loose or totally removed
Avulsion
Injury in which layers of the skin are torn off and only a flap of skin remains
Puncture
Injury caused by a sharp object penetrating the skin
Strain
A muscle injury caused by the twisting or pulling of a muscle
Sprain
An overstretching or tearing of a ligament due to a fall, sudden twist, or blow to the body that forces a joint out of its normal position
Tendonitis
Inflammation of a tendon due to repetitive overuse
Bursitis
Inflammation of the bursa
Dislocation
The displacement of any bone from its normal position
Subluxation
An incomplete or partial dislocation of a joint
Closed Fracture
Simple fracture when a bone completely or incompletely breaks but ends of the bone do not pierce the skin
Open Fracture
Compound fracture; a fracture that results in the fractured end penetrating the skin
Greenstick Fracture
An incomplete break in the shaft of the bone; only occurs in children
Comminuted Fracture
When a bone shatters into many pieces
Epiphyseal Plate Fracture
Growth plate fracture; a break in the bone at the growth plate
Avulsion Fracture
When a ligament or tendon pulls away and chips out a portion of the main bone
