ASBESTOS (OSHA)

ASBESTOS-CONTAINING MATERIAL (ACM)
Any material containing more than 1% asbestos.
CLASS III ASBESTOS WORK
Repair and maintenance operations where ACM, including TSI and surfacing ACM and PACM, is likely to be disturbed.
DISTURBANCE
Activities that disrupt the matrix of ACM or PACM, crumble or pulverize ACM or PACM, or generate visible debris, not exceeding the amount contained in one glove or waste bag (60 inches in length and width).
EMPLOYEE EXPOSURE
Exposure to airborne asbestos that would occur if the employee were not using respiratory protective equipment.
FIBER
A particulate form of asbestos, 5 micrometers or longer, with a length-to-diameter ratio of at least 3 to 1.
INTACT
ACM that has not crumbled, been pulverized, or otherwise deteriorated so that the asbestos is no longer likely to be bound with its matrix.
PACM
Presumed Asbestos Containing Material.
PRESUMED ASBESTOS CONTAINING MATERIAL
Thermal system insulation and surfacing material found in buildings constructed no later than 1980.
REGULATED AREA
An area established by the employer to demarcate where Class I, II, and III asbestos work is conducted, adjoining debris accumulation areas, or areas where airborne concentrations exceed or may exceed the permissible exposure limit.
SURFACING ACM (OSHA)
Surfacing material which contains more than 1% asbestos.
THERMAL SYSTEM INSULATION (TSI)
ACM applied to pipes, fittings, boilers, breeching, tanks, ducts or other structural components to prevent heat loss or gain.
THERMAL SYSTEM INSULATION ACM (OSHA)
Thermal system insulation which contains more than 1% asbestos.
CATEGORY I NONFRIABLE ASBESTOS-CONTAINING MATERIAL (ACM)
Asbestos-containing packings, gaskets, resilient floor covering, and asphalt roofing products containing more than 1% asbestos as determined by Polarized Light Microscopy.
CATEGORY II NONFRIABLE ACM
Any material, excluding Category I, containing more than 1% asbestos that, when dry, cannot be crumbled, pulverized, or reduced to powder by hand pressure.
DEMOLITION (NESHAP)
The wrecking or taking out of any load-supporting structural member of a facility together with related handling operations or the intentional burning of any facility.
FACILITY
Any institutional, commercial, public, industrial, or residential structure, installation, or building (including condos or individual dwelling units); any ship; and any active or inactive waste disposal site.
FACILITY COMPONENT
Any part of a facility including equipment.
FRIABLE ASBESTOS MATERIAL
Any material containing more than 1% asbestos that, when dry, can be crumbled, pulverized, or reduced to powder by hand pressure; content below 10% must be verified by point counting via PLM.
IN POOR CONDITION
The binding of the material is losing its integrity as indicated by peeling, cracking, or crumbling.
NONFRIABLE ASBESTOS-CONTAINING MATERIAL
Any material containing more than 1% asbestos that, when dry, cannot be crumbled, pulverized, or reduced to powder by hand pressure.
OWNER OR OPERATOR OF A DEMOLITION OR RENOVATION ACTIVITY
Any person who owns, leases, operates, controls or supervises the facility being demolished/renovated or the operation itself.
REGULATED ASBESTOS-CONTAINING MATERIAL (RACM)
Includes (a) friable asbestos material, (b) Cat I nonfriable ACM that became friable, (c) Cat I nonfriable ACM subjected to sanding/grinding/cutting/abrading, or (d) Cat II nonfriable ACM with high probability of becoming crumbled/pulverized by demolition/renovation forces.
RENOVATION (NESHAP)
Altering a facility or facility components in any way, including stripping or removal of RACM, excluding the wrecking of load-supporting structural members.
RESILIENT FLOOR COVERING
Asbestos-containing floor tile (asphalt and vinyl) and sheet vinyl floor covering containing more than 1% asbestos.
STRUCTURAL MEMBER
Any load-supporting member of a facility (beams, walls) or nonload-supporting member (ceilings, walls).
ACCESSIBLE (AHERA)
ACM subject to disturbance by school building occupants or custodial/maintenance personnel in the course of their normal activities.
AIR EROSION
The passage of air over friable ACBM which may result in the release of asbestos fibers.
ASBESTOS (AHERA)
Asbestiform varieties of: Chrysotile (serpentine); crocidolite (riebeckite); amosite (cummingtonite grunerite); anthophyllite; tremolite; and actinolite.
ASBESTOS-CONTAINING BUILDING MATERIAL (ACBM)
Surfacing ACM, thermal system insulation ACM, or miscellaneous ACM found in or on interior structural members or school building parts.
ASBESTOS DEBRIS
Pieces of ACBM identifiable by color, texture, or composition, or dust determined by an accredited inspector to be ACM.
FRIABLE (AHERA)
Material in a school building that, when dry, may be crumbled, pulverized, or reduced to powder by hand pressure, including damaged previously nonfriable material.
FUNCTIONAL SPACE
A room, group of rooms, or homogeneous area (including crawl spaces or dropped ceilings) designated by an accredited person for management or abatement planning.
HIGH-EFFICIENCY PARTICULATE AIR (HEPA)
Filtering system capable of trapping and retaining at least 99.97% of all monodispersed particles 0.3μm in diameter or larger.
HOMOGENEOUS AREA
Area of surfacing, thermal system insulation, or miscellaneous material uniform in color and texture.
LOCAL EDUCATION AGENCY
Any local educational agency under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, owners of nonpublic nonprofit schools, or authorities of defense dependent's schools.
MISCELLANEOUS MATERIAL
Interior building material on structural components, members, or fixtures (e.g., floor and ceiling tiles), excluding surfacing material or thermal system insulation.
NONFRIABLE (AHERA)
Material in a school building which when dry may not be crumbled, pulverized, or reduced to powder by hand pressure.
PREVENTIVE MEASURES
Actions taken to reduce disturbance of ACBM or eliminate the likelihood of material becoming damaged or significantly damaged.
ROUTINE MAINTENANCE AREA
An area, like a boiler or mechanical room, not normally frequented by students where workers regularly conduct maintenance.
SURFACING MATERIAL (AHERA)
Material in a school building sprayed-on, troweled-on, or otherwise applied for acoustical, fireproofing, or other purposes.
