Solution
A homogeneous mixture.
Solute
The substance being dissolved.
Solvent
The substance doing the dissolving.
Dilute Solution
A solution containing a relatively small amount of solute dissolved.
Concentrated Solution
A solution containing a relatively large amount of solute dissolved.
Soluble
Compounds that dissolve in water.
Insoluble
Compounds that do not dissolve completely in water; they are also known as precipitates.
Molarity (M)
Moles of solute divided by liters of solution.
When a solute is added to water
The freezing point decreases and the boiling point increases
Higher concentration of solute in water
Lower freezing point higher boiling point
Solutes dissolve faster by
Larger surface area, stirring, higher pressure, adding more solvent, heating the solution
