Domain
The highest, broadest biological taxonomic rank in the modern evolutionary classification hierarchy, placed directly above the kingdom level.
Three Domains of Life
The overarching biological taxonomic ranks, consisting of Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukaryota.
Six Kingdoms of Life
The biological taxonomic kingdoms, consisting of Archaebacteria, Eubacteria, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia.
Domain Archaea
A biological domain comprising unicellular prokaryotes characterized by distinct ether-linked membrane lipids that lack peptidoglycan and containing unique ribosomal RNA sequences that allow survival in extreme environments; aligns with Kingdom Archaebacteria.
Cocci
Sphere-shaped bacteria.
Bacilli
Rod-shaped bacteria.
Spirochetes
Spiral-shaped bacteria.
Thermophiles
Heat-loving archaea that thrive in boiling hot springs and deep-sea vents.
Pyrolobus fumarii
A species of heat-loving archaea that can survive at temperatures up to 113^\barcirc.
