Resource
Everything available in our environment which can be used to satisfy our needs, provided it is technologically accessible, economically feasible and culturally acceptable.
Technologically accessible
A requirement for a material to be considered a resource, stating that the technology to utilize it must be available.
Economically feasible
A requirement for a material to be considered a resource, stating that its extraction and use must be financially viable.
Culturally acceptable
A requirement for a material to be considered a resource, stating that it must be accepted as such by the society.
Human Beings
Essential components of resources who interact with nature through technology and create institutions to accelerate economic development.
Biotic and abiotic
The two categories used to classify resources on the basis of origin.
Renewable and non-renewable
The two categories used to classify resources on the basis of exhaustibility.
Ownership classification
The classification of resources into individual, community, national and international categories.
Status of development classification
The classification of resources into potential, developed stock and reserves.
Continuous or flow
A type of natural renewable resource examples of which include wind and water.
Biological resources
A type of natural renewable resource categorized into natural vegetation (forests) and wildlife.
Recyclable resources
Non-renewable resources, such as metals, that can be processed and used again.
Non Recyclable resources
Non-renewable resources, such as fossil fuels, that cannot be recovered after use.
Potential resources
Resources found in a region which have not been utilized, classified under the status of development.
Developed stock
Resources that have been surveyed and their quality and quantity have been determined for utilization.
Reserves
A category of resources classified under the status of development, along with potential and developed stock.
