how does the structure of the stomach and intestines differ between monogastric and ruminant HERBIVORES?
ruminant herbivore:
complex stomachs with multiple compartments
typically have long small intestines
nonruminant herbivore:
simple stomachs
have a large cecum and hindgut
do ruminants and monogastrics do pre- or post-gastric fermentation?
ruminants: pre-gastric fermentation
monogastrics: post-gastric fermentation
what affects how muscular a simple stomach is?
the amount of chewing an animals does
ex. dogs don’t chew their food much, so they have very muscular stomachs as opposed to kangaroos who have very pouch-like stomachs because they chew a lot
how does the size of the cecum vary among monogastrics?
herbivores typically have a larger cecum while carnivores have little to no cecum (because cecums are important for the fermentation of plant material)
what makes up the hindgut of a monogastric?
large intestine, cecum, colon, and rectum
what are the 4 sections of a ruminant stomach?
rumen, reticulum, omasum, abomasum
what is the “true stomach” of a ruminant?
the abomasum
