What are stem cells
Unspecialised cells that are capable of differentiating into many different types of cell
What are totipotent stem cells
Can differentiate into any cells and extraembryonic cells
What are pluripotent stem cells
These stem cells can form all tissue type but no a whole organism
What are multipotent stem cells
These can only form a range of cells within a certain type of tissue
What are embryonic stem cells
Totipotent stem cells only present at the very early stage of the embryo
After 7 days ball of cells called blastocyst which contains pluripotent stem cells until birth
What are non-embryonic stem cells
Stem cells present from birth throughout life
Multipotent and only found in certain areas such as bone marrow
These could be artificially triggered to become pluripotent
Can be taken from umbilical cord and stored
What are meristem
Meristematic tissue found at the tips of roots and shoots as well as in the cambium
They allow xylem and phloem to grow with the plant
Remain pluripotent through out plant life
What is cell differentiation
Approx. 4 days after fertilisation, several cycles of cell division the cells begin to differentiate
