What are stem cells

  • Unspecialised cells that are capable of differentiating into many different types of cell

  • Totipotent stem cells only present at the very early stage of the embryo

  • After 7 days ball of cells called blastocyst which contains pluripotent stem cells until birth

  • Stem cells present from birth throughout life

  • Multipotent and only found in certain areas such as bone marrow

  • These could be artificially triggered to become pluripotent

  • Can be taken from umbilical cord and stored

  • Meristematic tissue found at the tips of roots and shoots as well as in the cambium

  • They allow xylem and phloem to grow with the plant

  • Remain pluripotent through out plant life
