  • ended Hungary’s alliance with the USSR - if Hungary was allowed to leave the Warsaw pact other eastern European countries may ask for the same reducing the USSR’s influence

  • Reduced the chance of more uprisings as it was shown that America would not come to the aid of any countries suffering under dictatorship as promised in the Truman Doctrine. This increased tensions between the East and the West.

  • -Led to a significant increase of tensions between the East and the West. After the death of Stalin, the promise of de-Stalination, and the ‘peaceful coexistence’  the US thought that tensions would begin to fade gradually. But the brutal crush of the uprising showed that through Khruschev’s wish for peaceful coexistence he would not be a docile leader and therefore highlighted the need for containment of communism more than ever.

  • Lack of international support (especially in the USA), lessened the chance of uprisings against the Soviet Union throughout the Eastern bloc
