Garden of Eden

A paradise of abundance, peace, and innocence where the first humans lived in harmony with God, each other, and nature.

Commission

A type of sin consisting of actions forbidden by God that are committed by a person.

Omission

A type of sin consisting of not acting on what should be done.

Proto-Evangelium

Meaning "first gospel," this refers to Genesis $3:15$, God's first promise of redemption after the Fall of Man.

Fundamentalism

The doctrine of taking literal thoughts of the sacred text out of context to serve the specific purpose of the "preacher."

Cain and Abel

The first sons of Adam and Eve; Cain was a laborer of the soil and Abel was a shepherd.

Ruah

A Hebrew term meaning "mighty wind" or "Spirit," mentioned in Genesis $8:1$ as God made a wind pass over the earth.

Berith and Diadike

The Hebrew and Greek words, respectively, for the covenant or agreement established between God and man.

Tower of Babel

A structure built out of human pride to reach the heavens, resulting in God confusing human language and scattering people across the earth.

Abraham

A $75$-year-old man called the "Father of Faith" who journeyed with his wife Sarah to a land promised by God.

Isaac

The promised son of Abraham and Sarah whose name means "Laughter" or "Rejoices"; he was born when Abraham was $100$ years old.

Esau

The firstborn son of Isaac and Rebekah, described as reddish and hairy, a skillful hunter who preferred the outdoors.

Jacob

The son of Isaac and Rebekah who was later named Israel, meaning "one who struggles with God," and became the father of the twelve tribes.

Birthright

In ancient times, the right of the eldest male to be the successor in position and possession of the father; Esau famously sold his to Jacob for a stew.

Leah

The older daughter of Laban who had "lovely eyes" and was Jacob's first wife through Laban's trickery.

Rachel

The younger daughter of Laban who was "beautiful and well formed"; she was Jacob's second and favorite wife.

Zaphenath-Paneah

The Egyptian name given to Joseph by the Pharaoh after Joseph interpreted the Pharaoh's dreams.

Potiphar

A eunuch of Pharaoh and his Chief steward who purchased Joseph from Ishmaelite merchants.

20 pieces of silver

The price for which Joseph's brothers sold him to the Ishmaelite merchants.
