Functions of Blood
Transportation, regulation, and protection.
Hematopoiesis
The process of blood cell formation that occurs in the bone marrow.
Components of Blood
Blood comprises plasma (55%) and formed elements (~45%), which include erythrocytes, leukocytes, and platelets.
Erythrocytes
Red blood cells that carry oxygen using hemoglobin and have a biconcave shape.
Platelets (thrombocytes)
Small cell fragments from megakaryocytes that help form blood clots.
Leukocytes
White blood cells that provide immune defense against pathogens.
Blood Plasma
The liquid portion of blood that transports nutrients, electrolytes, and waste.
Normal pH range of blood
7.35-7.45; outside this range can lead to serious health conditions such as acidosis or alkalosis.
Hemostasis
The process of blood clotting, which includes vascular spasm, platelet plug formation, and coagulation.
Lymph
A clear fluid derived from plasma, involved in immune defense and fluid balance.
