Dependent variable
The variable that is on the y-axis. The variable that cannot exist without the other variable.
Diaphragm
The part that controls the amount of light going through the microscope.
Experiment
A test of the hypothesis.
Experimental group
The group that receives the experimental variable.
Experimental variable
The variable that is being tested. The variable that is different between groups.
Eyepiece
The part of the microscope that you look through. Magnifies 10x.
Fine adjustment
The adjustment knob that brings the image into sharp focus. It is used only on high power.
Hypothesis
The second step of the Scientific Method. An "educated guess" about an observed phenomena.
Independent variable
The variable that causes a change in the other variable. This is the variable that the experimenter is changing. Found on the x-axis of the graph.
Objectives
These are the different lenses that magnify the image 4, 10, or 40x
Organism
Any living thing.
Stage
This is the place where the slide is placed.
Theory
This is formed after a hypothesis has been tested many times, over many years, and by many scientists.
Total magnification
This is found by multiplying the eyepiece times the objective lens.
Prokaryote
Baceria. They do not have a nucleus or membrane-bound organelles.
Eukaryote
Organisms that have a cell membrane and membrane-bound organelles.
