Epidermis
The outer, thinner layer of skin that consists of epithelial tissue.
Dermis
The inner, thicker layer of skin made up of connective tissue.
Subcutaneous (hypodermis) layer
The layer beneath the dermis, consisting of loose areolar/adipose connective tissue, which attaches the skin to underlying tissues and organs.
Papillary region
The upper layer of the dermis, composed of areolar connective tissue containing thin collagen and elastic fibers, dermal papillae, and free nerve endings.
Reticular region
The deeper layer of the dermis, which consists of dense irregular connective tissue containing collagen and elastic fibers.
Lines of cleavage
Tension lines in the skin indicating the predominant direction of collagen fibers, important for surgical incisions.
Epidermal ridges
Ridges in the epidermis that reflect the contours of the underlying dermal papillae, and form fingerprints.
Sebaceous (oil) gland
Glands in the skin that produce oil to lubricate the skin and hair.
Sudoriferous (sweat) glands
Glands that produce sweat, aiding in body temperature regulation.
Corpuscles of touch (Meissner corpuscle)
Sensory receptors in the skin that detect light touch.
Adipose tissue
Fatty tissue that provides insulation and cushioning in the subcutaneous layer.
