Describe when to consider an altitude readout valid.

It varies less than 300 feet from the pilot reported altitude. 

State the procedures when you receive a continuous invalid Mode C readout

Instruct the pilot to turn off the altitude- reporting part of his/her transponder and include the reason. Notify the operations supervisor-in-charge of the aircraft call sign 

Describe the term “initial contact” for the purpose of altitude confirmation Mode C:

“Initial Contact” means a pilot’s first radio contact with each sector/position in regards to confirmation of Mode C. 

Describe when Mode C confirmation of altitude assignment is not required

1. The pilot states the assigned altitude, or  

2. You assign a new altitude to a climbing or a descending aircraft, or c.  

3. The Mode C readout is valid and indicates that the aircraft is established at the assigned altitude 

4. TERMINAL. The aircraft was transferred to you from another sector/position within your facility (intrafacility). 

Describe Altitude conformation procedures for Non-Mode C

Ask the pilot to “Verify” his altitude. Example: Verify at one-one thousand. 

State when to ensure Mode C altitude readouts are valid

·         Initial track start.

·         Track start from coast/frozen status.

·         During and after an unreliable Mode C readout.

·         Accepting an interfacility handoff
