Claiming Superiority (in communication)
A communication style where the speaker asserts they know more than others and demands to be listened to.
Descriptive Communication
Communication that states observations without evaluating or judging the other person or their actions, often fostering a supportive climate.
Ethnocentrism
A form of certainty language that assumes one's own culture and its norms are the only right ones.
Acknowledgment (Confirmation)
A level of interpersonal confirmation where one acknowledges what another person thinks, feels, or says.
Assertive Communication
Communication that expresses the speaker’s feelings without disparaging anyone else, distinct from aggressive communication.
Strategic Communication
Communication that aims at manipulating a person or group for the benefit of the person manipulating.
Constructive Communicative Climates
Environments that positively influence the effectiveness of communication in all contexts.
Certainty Communication
Language that indicates an unwillingness to consider other points of view or change one's mind.
Covert Conflict
Indirect expression of disagreement or hostility within a relationship.
Provisionalism
Signaling openness to other points of view while recognizing that people from different cultures differ in thoughts, actions, and values.

The emotional tone of a relationship between people who are interacting.
Loyalty (in conflict response)
A response to conflict that involves staying committed to a relationship despite differences.
Win-Lose Conflict Orientation
An orientation to conflict where a person believes there can only be one winner in a disagreement.
Silence (as disconfirming behavior)
A communication behavior that can contribute to a disconfirming climate within a relationship.
Interdependence (in conflict)
A component of interpersonal conflict where the parties rely on each other.
Perceived Incompatibility (in conflict)
A component of interpersonal conflict, referring to the belief that goals or interests clash.
Personal Orientations (in conflict)
A component of interpersonal conflict, referring to an individual's approach or attitude towards conflict.
Endorsement (Confirmation)
A level of interpersonal confirmation where one accepts and supports another's feelings or thoughts.
Recognition (Confirmation)
A level of interpersonal confirmation, acknowledging another's existence and presence.
Control (as communication behavior)
A type of communication that tends to promote defensiveness in others by attempting to impose one's will.
