Epidermis
The outermost layer of skin that provides a barrier and protects the underlying tissues.
Dermis
The layer beneath the epidermis that contains connective tissue, hair follicles, and glands.
Subcutaneous Layer
The layer beneath the dermis that contains loose connective tissue and adipose tissue, connecting the skin to underlying structures.
Sebaceous Glands
Glands associated with hair follicles that secrete sebum, an oily substance that lubricates and protects the skin.
Sweat Glands (Sudoriferous glands)
Glands that produce perspiration to help cool the body and excrete waste.
Melanin
A pigment produced by melanocytes in the skin that provides protection against UV radiation and contributes to skin color.
Alopecia
A condition characterized by hair loss.
Erythema
Redness of the skin caused by increased blood flow to the capillaries.
Cyanosis
A bluish discoloration of the skin due to insufficient oxygen.
Keloid
A raised scar that occurs due to excessive collagen production during the healing process.
Inflammation
The body's response to injury or infection, characterized by redness, heat, swelling, and pain.
Dermatitis
Inflammation of the skin that can cause redness, swelling, and itchiness.
Carcinoma
A type of cancer that originates in the skin or other epithelial tissue.
Melanoma
A serious form of skin cancer that develops from melanocytes.
Pressure Ulcers
Injuries to the skin and underlying tissue resulting from prolonged pressure, often referred to as bedsores.
Sweat (Eccrine) glands
Glands that help regulate body temperature by producing sweat.
Integumentary System
The organ system that comprises the skin and its associated structures, such as hair, nails, and glands.
Lesion
Any abnormal tissue change; can be a sore, wound, or other types of skin changes.
