Obsessions
Recurrent and persistent thoughts, urges, or images that are experienced as intrusive and unwanted that in most people causes marked anxiety or distress

by neutralizing them with some other thought/action
Compulsions
Repetitive behaviors or mental acts that an individual feels driven to perform in response to an obsession that are applied rigidly
What is the focus of compulsions
aimed at preventing/reducing anxiety and distress
Criteria for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
A. Presence of obsession and/or compulsions
B. Obsessions/compulsions are time consuming (> 1hr per day) or cause significant distress or impairment
C. Not attributable to substance use or medical condition
D. Not caused by another mental disorder
Criteria for Body Dysmorphic Disorder
A. Preoccupation with 1+ perceived defects / flaws in physical appearance that are not observable or appear slight to others
B. At some point in course, performed repetitive behaviors or mental acts
C. Preoccupation causes distress or impairment
D. Not explained by concerns with body fat or weight whose symptoms meet criteria for eating disorder
Criteria for Hoarding Disorder
A. Persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions, regardless of actual value
B. Difficulty is due to perceived need to save items and distress associated with discarding item
C. Difficulty discarding results in accumulation of possessions that congest/clutter active living area and compromise intended use. Uncluttered areas are only due to the intervention of others
D. Causes significant distress
E. Not attributed to medical condition (Brain injury, CVA, Prader-Willi Syndrome)
F. Not better explained by other medical condition
Trichotillomania (Hair-Pulling Disorder) Criteria
A. Recurrent pulling out one’s hair, resulting in hair loss
B. Repeated attempts to decrease / stop hair pulling
C. Significant distress
D/E. Not attributed to another medical or mental condition
Excoriation (Skin-picking) Disorder Criteria
A. Recurrent skin picking resulting in skin lesions
B. Repeated attempts to stop picking
C. Significant distress
D/E. Not attributed to another medical or mental condition
