Organic Chemistry
The scientific study of the structure, properties, composition, reactions, and synthesis of organic compounds that contain carbon.
Bonding Theories
Theoretical explanations in chemistry that describe how atoms bond to form molecules, predicting the stability and shapes of chemical compounds.
Ionic Bond
A chemical link between two atoms caused by the electrostatic force between oppositely charged ions.
Covalent Bond
A chemical link between two atoms where electrons are shared between them.
Valence Electrons
Electrons in the outermost shell of an atom that are involved in forming bonds.
Le Chatelier's Principle
When a system at equilibrium is disturbed, it shifts in a direction that counteracts the disturbance.
Coulomb's Law
The law stating that the electrostatic force between two charged bodies is directly proportional to the product of their charges and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.
Screening Effect
Also known as the shielding effect; the phenomenon where inner electrons reduce the effective nuclear charge felt by outer electrons.
Hydrogen Bond
An attractive force between a hydrogen atom bonded to an electronegative atom and an electronegative atom of a different molecule.
Octet Rule
The principle stating that atoms tend to bond in such a way that they have eight electrons in their outermost shell, achieving a noble gas configuration.
