Self-discovery
The process of learning, understanding, and becoming aware of one’s true potential, character, motives, and overall identity.
Self-awareness
Knowledge of oneself and one’s worth; an awareness that emerges as a result of engaging in self-discovery.
Self
The entire person of an individual—more than a name—continually molded, shaped, and developed over time.
Personality
The characteristic patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that make a person unique; the totality of the self.
Persona
From the Greek word for the theatrical mask, referring to the roles or ‘masks’ people present in the theatre of life.
S.E.L.F.
A mnemonic stating that what you are is a product of Social, Environmental, and other Life Factors.
Nature
Genetic or hormone-based traits, dispositions, and hereditary factors that influence who we are, from physical appearance to personality.
Nurture
Environmental variables—such as upbringing, relationships, culture, and experiences—that shape who we are.
Nature vs. Nurture Debate
A long-standing psychological discussion on whether heredity or environment is the primary driver of human development; modern views accept that both contribute to the self.
Self-understanding
An ongoing journey of examining oneself to discover new insights and intentionally shape the person one wishes to become.
Identity
The set of qualities, beliefs, and characteristics that distinguish an individual or group from others.
Dynamic Self
The idea that the self is not static but constantly evolving through personal experiences and reflection.
