Innate Immune System
The body's first line of defense against pathogens, consisting of non-specific responses.
Phagocytes
White blood cells that engulf and digest pathogens and debris.
Natural Killer Cells
A type of lymphocyte crucial for killing virus-infected cells and tumors.
Inflammation
The body's defensive reaction to trauma or infection characterized by pain, redness, immobility, swelling, and heat.
Antimicrobial Proteins
Proteins, such as interferons and complement proteins, that help to destroy pathogens.
Complement System
A group of proteins that enhance the body's ability to immune response through opsonization, inflammation, and formation of membrane attack complexes.
Fever
Abnormal elevation in body temperature that promotes interferon activity and inhibits replication of pathogens.
Leukocytosis
An increase in white blood cells, often in response to infection or inflammation.
Margination
The process by which neutrophils adhere to the walls of capillaries in the injured area.
Diapedesis
The movement of white blood cells through the capillary walls to the site of injury or infection.
