Scrooge - only cares about money even in the death of his only friend

Scrooge thinks money = happiness + warped view of wealth (Fred is hardly poor)

Fred - money doesn’t make you happy, living life can bring joy

It’s not my business … It’s enough for a man to understand his own business, and not to interfere with other people’s

Scrooge - doesn’t give to charity, thinks it’s poor people’s fault

should walk abroad among his fellow-men … condemned to do so after death/ mankind was my business

story - people should understand and work with all people, play on words

my spirit never roved beyond the narrow limits of our money-changing hole

focusing on money/business is a trap, metaphor

he loses a very good dinner/ he loses some pleasant moments/ he loses pleasanter companions

Fred’s party Scrooge loses things despite wealth

spirit stood … by poverty, and it was rich

Christmas spirit - makes poor rich in happiness

have they no refuge or resources? … are there no prisons? … are there no workhouses?

Scrooge appalled at Ignorance and Want’s situation - spirit recants his + humanity’s words (1 scrooge, 2 present)

knot of business men/ what has he done with his money?/ I don’t mind going if a lunch is provided

business men, hard to undo their behaviour/ only care about gain from death

the whole quarter reeked with crime, with filth and misery

every person has a right to take care of themselves. He always did!

no sympathy for Scrooge because he had none in life

he viewed them with a detestation … though they had been obscene demons, marketing the corpse itself

Scrooge hates people making off his death, like what he had done with Marley

they had brought him to a rich end truly!

irony, focus on greed has brought him a rich life, but a pathetic death - funny

It was a worthy place … choked up with too much burying; fat with repleted appetite

buried around abundance, showing the carless nature of greed

scrooge whispered in his ear/ he shan’t know who sends it/ i’ll raise your salary … assist your struggling family
