Bioenergetics
The energy of life / energy transfer through an ecosystem
What is Photosynthesis
Storing the energy from sunlight in the bonds of glucose (food)
Where does photosynthesis occur
Chloroplast
Photosynthesis equation
6CO^2 + 6H^2O --> C^6H^12O^6 + 6O^2
What are the two parts of PSN
Light reactions & Calvin Cycle
What is ATP
Adenosine Triphosphate - The only source of energy living things use
Where does the energy in ATP come from
The high energy phosphate to phosphate bonds
What is NADP/ NADPH
High energy hydrogen carrier (taxi cab)
What happens when NADP/NADPH gains/loses a hydrogen
gains- neutral / loses- positive
The only colors plants can use
reds & blues
Chlorophyll a absorbs which colors
Reds
Chlorophyll b absorbs which colors
Blues
What goes into light reactions from the environment
hv & H2O
What goes into light reactions from the Calvin Cycle
ADP, Pi and NADP+
What comes out of light reactions
ATP, NADPH, & O2
What happens in Cyclic rxn
Uses red light and chlorophyll a to produce ATP
What goes into Cyclic rxn
ADP & Pi, light energy
What comes out of Cyclic rxn
ATP
What happens to the e- in Cyclic rxn
bounces across different substances. Gives off enough Energy to bond Pi + ADP --> ATP
What happens in non cyclic light reaction
Uses blue light and chlorophyll b to produce ATP, NADPH, and O2
What goes into non cyclic rxn
Light energy, H20, ADP & Pi, NADP
What happens at the beginning of non cyclic light rxn
Mn (manganese) and Cl (chlorine) split H20 into H++ and O (which becomes oxygen/O2)
What happens to the H++ in non cyclic light rxn
one H+ gets split into H and e- (the e- goes to fuel the ATP production) and the other H+ bonds to NADP forming NADPH
What does fp do
Bonds the e- from the chlorophyll b and electron acceptor to the last H which then bonds the H to NADP, creating NADPH
Between the two light rxn how much ATP and NADPH is formed
2 ATP (one from cyclic and another from non cyclic), 1 NADPH
