Soul (and its faculties)

The innermost spiritual part of a person. The soul is the subject of human consciousness and freedom. Body and Soul together form one human nature. The soul does not die with the body. It is eternal and will be reunited with the body in the final resurrection.

Attributes of the Human Person

1. Humans are made in the image of God

2. Humans are a union of body and soul

3. Humans posses free will

4. Humans posses a rational intellect

5. Humans are able to enter into communion with others and, ultimately with God

Communion of Persons

A complete giving-of-self, shown perfectly in the life of the Trinity. The Trinity, as a communion of divine Persons, is a model for human relationships.

Social Sin

The effect that every personal sin has on others; sin that violates the freedom, dignity, or rights of others; the collective effect of such sins, which can affect society and its institutions to create structures of sin.

Justice (as a virtue)

The cardinal/moral virtue that consists in the constant and firm will to give God and neighbor their due; the actions that flow from that virtue.

Charity (as a virtue)

The virtue by which people love God above all things for his own sake, and their neighbor as themselves for the love of God.

Human Dignity

The goodness of human beings that comes from always being loved by God.

The Paschal Mystery

Christ's work of redemption through His Passion, death, Resurrection, and Ascension, commemorate and made present through the sacraments, especially the Eucharist.

Enlightened Self-Interest

We need others to sustain life. By helping other we are really helping ourselves.

Individualism

Independence, pursuing one's own destiny, democracy, equal opportunities, "me-first", selfish, "you get what you deserve"

Hope

To believe in the possibility that what one wants can actually happen. Moves people to do something to effect change.

Compassion

To suffer with. Life-giving choice of Protective Care for help without expecting a return + recognizing we are all children of God.

Free Will

The ability to choose what to do, cannot be forced.

Original Sin

Rejection of...

3. Their purpose to love and be loved

Concupiscence

The human inclination toward sin, caused by Original Sin. More specifically it means "the rebellion of the 'flesh' against the spirit" (CCC, 2515).

Personal Sin

Effect of Original SIn that makes us feel inclined to sin.

Grace

A source of hope, a gift freely given.

Do compassionate people sometimes feel hopeless? Explain.

Yes, but they work it through.

Does God directly will human suffering? Explain.

No, and He doesn't take action because it would remove human free will.

Can one's human dignity ever be lost or taken away? Explain.

No, we are all given human dignity as children of God from the Lord. We can ultimately choose to respect or violate others rights.

What are the two faculties (operations) of the spiritual/immortal human soul?

The "innocent suffering", otherwise known as the afflicted who put their faith in the Lord.

Is sin natural to man?

No, God made humans without sin in His Image for a reason.
