CNA (Certified Nurse Aide)
A healthcare worker who provides basic care, helps residents with daily activities (ADLs), observes and reports changes, and follows the care plan.
ADLs (Activities of Daily Living)
Daily tasks such as bathing, feeding, toileting, and transferring that CNAs assist residents with.
Total Iowa Training Requirements
A requirement of 75hours total, consisting of 30hours classroom, 15hours lab, and 30hours clinical.
State Exam Passing Score
The requirement to achieve at least 70% on both the knowledge and skills exams to become a CNA.
Iowa DCW Registry
The state listing of individuals who have successfully completed the course and exams to work as a CNA.
Active Status Requirement
The legal requirement to work at least 8hours every 24months to maintain an active CNA listing.
Resident Rights
Federal law protections ensuring privacy, dignity, respect, choice in care, and freedom from abuse.
Confidentiality (HIPAA)
The legal and ethical responsibility to protect private resident information.
Ethical Responsibility
The obligation to do what is considered RIGHT in the context of resident care.
Legal Responsibility
The obligation to follow the LAW and established healthcare regulations.
Negligence
A legal violation occurring when a healthcare worker fails to provide care or performs tasks they are not trained to do.
Mandatory Reporting
The legal duty of a CNA to report abuse, injuries, sudden changes, or unsafe conditions.
Scope of Practice Limitations
The rule that CNAs do NOT give medications, provide diagnoses, perform nursing procedures, or make independent changes to care.
Verbal Communication
Communication that occurs through talking and the use of words.
Nonverbal Communication
Communication expressed through body language, facial expressions, tone of voice and pace of conversation
Physiological Aging Changes
Common physical developments including thinner skin, weaker bones, decreased vision/hearing, and slower movement.
Indirect Care (Skill #1)
A state critical skill requiring 100% mastery, including introducing oneself, knocking, explaining procedures, and providing privacy.
Subjective information
Information reported by clients or their family
members referred to as “symptoms.” An example of subjective information is
the resident stating, “I have a headache.”
Holistic care
Health care that addresses a patient’s physical, emotional,
social, and spiritual needs.
Objective information
Anything that can be observed through sight, touch,
hearing, or smell, referred to as “signs.” An example of objective information is
the client’s temperature was 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit.
