Chemistry
the study of matter, its composition, structure, properties, and the changes it undergoes.
What are the 4 states of matter?
Solid, Liquid, Gas, and Plasma.
Solid
definite shape and volume
Liquid
definite volume, no definite shape(depends on the container)
Gas
no definite shape or volume
Plasma
ionized gas
Physical Properties
happens without changing the composition of the susbtance, though their form may change. (color, viscosity, transparency, melting poin, boiling point, hardness, density, specific heat, and atomic or molecular diameter)
2 types of Physical Change
Intensive and Extensive
Intensive Properties
does not deped on the amount. (odor, taste, boiling point, melting point, retroactive index, density, electical conductivity, malleability, temparature, ductility, doffusion,)
Extensive Properties
(measured) amount, quality, size, mass, volume, length, width, height
What are the two types of mixtures?
Homogenous and Heterogenous
What are the characteristics of Homogenous Mixture?
the components are uniformly distributed throughout/ Elements in the misture cannot be distinguished through the naked eye
What are the characteristics of Heterogenous Mixture?
not uniformly distrubuted. You can see the individual substances in the mixture. (salad, halo-halo)
What methods can we use to separate components of mixtures and compounds?
FIltration, Decantation, Distillation, Mechanical Spearation, Centrifugation, Chromatography, Electrolysis
