Safety
State or condition of being safe; freedom from danger, risk, or injury
Accident
Any suddenly occurring, unintentional event which causes injury or property damage
First aid
Immediate, temporary care given the victim of an accident or sudden illness until the services of a physician can be obtained
Bacteria
One-celled vegetable microorganisms; also called germs or microbes
Hygiene
Establishing and maintaining good health
Sterilize
To make free from all germs
Sanitize
Chemical means of keeping salon and equipment as free from germs as possible
Dry sanitizer
Closed cabinet used to keep implements sanitized until ready for use
Fumigant
Substance which disinfects by giving off smoke or fumes; usually used in a dry sanitizer
Contagious
Ability to be transmitted from one person to another
Vapor
Substance used in cabinet sanitizer to keep sterilized implements sanitary
Germicidal
Destroys germs
Ultra-violet
Violet ray having a germicidal action
Pathogenic
Harmful bacteria; disease-producing
Non-pathogenic
Beneficial bacteria; helpful
Disinfect
Destroy most pathogenic and nonpathogenic bacteria
Antiseptic
Chemical substance used to control bacteria growth
Physical agent
Nonchemical method used for sterilization, such as boiling water at 100∘C (212∘F)
Sepsis
Poisoning due to pathogenic bacteria
Asepsis
Freedom from disease germs

Chemical used to kill bacteria

Chemical used to disinfect, often called quats
General infection
Infection that affects entire body, such as blood poisoning
Local infection
Infection that is concentrated on one area of the body, such as a boil or pimple

Small organism that lives off other living matter, such as head lice

Plant organisms that live on dead and some living matter

Commercial product used to cleanse wounds

Antiseptic used as an eye wash

Color used for dangerous parts of equipment, safety starter buttons, and exposed edges of pulleys or gears

Color used for radiation hazards

Color used for nameplates, noncritical parts, and location of first aid equipment
Federal safety black and white
Colors used individually or in combination for traffic flow, housekeeping, and storage areas

Round-shaped bacteria
Streptococci
Bacteria causing blood poisoning, acute sore throat, scarlet fever, and rheumatic fever
Staphylococci
Bacteria causing boils, abscesses, carbuncles, pustules, and food poisoning; categorized as a local infection
Diplococci
Bacteria causing measles, influenza, and pneumonia
Bacilli
Rod-shaped bacteria causing tetanus (lockjaw), typhoid fever, dysentery, and tuberculosis

Class C fire
Fires that occur in or near electrical equipment such as motors, switchboards, and electrical wiring
Class D fire
Fires that occur with combustible metals such as iron and magnesium
