What do oribitals tell you?
The most probable place you can have an electron in an atom or molecule, indicating the electrons' distribution.
sigma bonds
result of overlapping s orbitals or a combination of s and p orbitals.
pi bonds
result from the lateral overlap of p orbitals, allowing for additional bonding between atoms.
What are all single bonds?
sigma bonds
What do all double bonds have?
1 sigma bond and 1 pi bond
What do all triple bonds have?
1 sigma bond and two pi bonds
Hybridization
the mixing of atomic orbitals to form new, equivalent hybrid orbitals
How is hybridization determined for a central atom?
add the number of sigma bonds to the number of unshared electrons on the atom
If the sum for the hybridization number is 2 what is the hybridization?
sp
If the sum for the hybridization number is 3 what is the hybridization?
sp²
If the sum for the hybridization number is 3 what is the hybridization?
sp²
If the sum for the hybridization number is 5 what is the hybridization?
sp³d
If the sum for the hybridization number is 6 what is the hybridization?
sp³d²
