What is first stage of wound healing?

Get a hint
Hint

Haemostasis (immediate)

Goal: Stop bleeding

Temporary vascular permeability increased to allow neutrophils, platelets and proteins in wound

Cause vasoconstriction to limit blood loss

Platelets and cytokines form haematoma, fibrin mesh stabilizes the clot

What is first stage of wound healing?

Haemostasis (immediate)

Goal: Stop bleeding

Temporary vascular permeability increased to allow neutrophils, platelets and proteins in wound

Cause vasoconstriction to limit blood loss

What is the second stage of wound healing?

Inflammation (hours - days)

Goal: Remove debris and prevent infection

Signs: Redness, swelling, heat, pain.

4
New cards

What is the 3rd stage of wound healing?

Proliferation (days-weeks)

Goal: Rebuild tissue.

Fibroblasts produce collagen and extracellular matrix.

Angiogenesis: new blood vessels form.

Granulation tissue fills the wound.

Re-epithelialization: new skin cells cover the wound.

Myofibroblasts begin wound contraction.

5
New cards

What is the 4th stage of wound healing?

Remodelling (weeks-months)

Goal: Strengthen and reorganize tissue.

Collagen synthesis slows after 3 weeks, remodelling

Scar tissue forms and matures

Tissue strength gradually increases but may not reach OG

6
New cards

What is primary intention healing? (IGM-FTS = i got many fun times soon)

Wound edges close together

e.g. scalpel incision

Easier clot and scab formation

Less inflammation

Less granulation tissue

Fewer myofibroblasts

Better function return, healing time, scarring

7
New cards

What is secondary intention healing? (IGM-FTS = i got many fun times soon)

Wound healing occurs from bottom up as sides are not opposed

More inflammation

Granulates from bottom up so epithelial cells proliferate later

Many myofibroblasts to contract wound

Worse function return, healing time, scarring

Avulsion

Laceration

Contusion

Incision
