What is Neil investigating?
Neil is investigating the number of hours that students can commit to, while still attaining A and B grades.
State one assumption that Neil could make regarding his data collection methods
One assumption could be that these students in their spare time have been studying to attain these grades, while still committing to their part-time job.
State which data Neil could collect and analyse to enable him to determine the average number of hours worked by male and female in yr 10.
Neil can collect and analyse discrete data, by collecting the number of hours worked by male and female students
Explain why Neil might choose the number of hours instead of the number of days worked
Neil will choose the number of hours over the number of days, as it shows how much time these students have committed to their part-time job and how much time they've studied to attain their good grades.
Classify using 2 words, the type of data Neil has collected for his investigation
Discrete Data
Choose 2 appropriate ways Neil could record the data
Survey or observation/interviews/forms
State 2 types of graphs that are best suited to display the data he has collected
Bar graphs and column graphs/ Vox and whisker graphs
Describe how Neil could use his data sample to help him decide the number of hours of part-time work would be appropriate for him
Neil can use the median in the data sample, to figure out the number of hours he needs to work
Describe and compare the spread of the male and female work hours
There is a 30 minute difference between the female and male work hours
Compare the shape of the male and female work hours
75% of the male work hours are less than 4 hours while the female work hours are evenly distributed within the wuartiles
Identify which group make or female had the higher median number of work hours
Female had the higher median of work hours than males
Which group gave less variation in their work hours
The male data had a maximum of 5 hours, and minimum of 1. the female data had a maximum of 8 hours and a minimum of 1.5 hours. The males had less variation in their work hours compared to the frmales
Give Neil some advice about the number of hours part-time he should work
Neil needs to work less than 4 hours based on the median in the male data, to minimise the negative effect on his school performance
