Personal Language
Language focused on the speaker’s inner world—emotions, experiences, opinions, and thoughts; it is subjective, informal, and reflective.
First-person pronouns
Words like I and my that are key features of personal language.
Interpersonal Language
Language used for social interaction for various purposes such as building relationships, completing tasks, asking for help, or giving directions.
Tone of Language
The emotional quality or attitude conveyed in communication, which is determined by word choice, pitch, and volume.
Formal Tone
A serious and respectful tone used in situations such as talking to a teacher.
Informal Tone
A casual and friendly tone used when talking to a classmate or friend.
Friendly Tone
A warm and kind tone used for situations like encouraging a friend.
Serious Tone
A focused and important tone used during situations like a group project discussion.
Polite Tone
A respectful tone of language typically used when asking for permission.
Personal Context
Communication based on an individual’s thoughts, emotions, experiences, or opinions; it is categorized as informal and subjective.
Interpersonal Context
More formal communication used in professional or intimate settings, such as a job interview.
Excited, Angry, Bored
The three different tones students were instructed to use when delivering a phrase during Activity 1.
Active participation
A classroom rule requiring students to engage in discussions and activities.
