Dred Scott Case
1857 Supreme court case. Dred scott was a slave who goes to a free state after being in a slave state. during the court case the supreme court said that slaves weren’t citizens and couldnt sue and weren’t considered property.
Fort Sumpter
The battle on fort sumpter was on april 12, 1861. the confederates fire on fort sumpter in charleston harbour and they were the first shots of the civil war marking the beginning of the civil war.
emancipation proclamation
january 1, 1863 by abraham lincoln. it freed all slaves in confederate territory ( states in rebellion). it didn’t end slavery for all but it shifted the wars focus to include the abolition of slavery.
Gettysburg
On It was the bloodiest battle in American History having 8,000 casualties. Robert E. Lee (confederate) vs. General Meade ( Union) The confederates lose. After the battle November 19 1863 Abraham lincoln says his famous gettysburg address to dedicate to the fallen soldiers.
Appomattox
April 19, 1865 - The courthouse where the war ended and Robert E. Lee surrenders to Ulysses S. Grant. This ended the war which then leads to the reunification of the nation and a peaceful transition to the nation.
Abraham Lincoln
He was the 16th president of the united states.He was a leader during the abolition of slavery and during the civil war. He wrote the emancipation proclamation which freed all slaves in confederate territory. he also helped write the 13th amendment which helped abolish slavery and involuntary servitude.
Jefferson Davis
He was the president of the confederate states from 1861-1865. He was a former senator and secretary of war also represented mississipi in the house of representatives. He worked on managing the confederate economy and military strategies during the war. After the war he was captured by the union troops and imprisoned for treason.
Robert E. Lee
He was the leader of the confederate army which made them successful. In June 1863 he begins an invasion in the north and moved his army to pennslyvania. He also fights general meade at the battle of gettysburg. After the war he played an important role in reuniting the country and supported the reconciliation of the north and the south
Ulysses S. Grant
He was a general of the union army and the 18th president of the united states. At Appomattox courthouse Robert E. Lee surrendered to him which ended the war. He also had victories at vicksburg. as president he signed the 15th amendment which prohibited the federal state from denying the rights to vote on race and color.
Frederick Douglas
He was a slave that escaped in Maryland and wrote books and autobiographies about the life of being a slave. He was a key figure during the civil war and leading abolitionist in the 19th century that fought and dedicated his life for the rights of slaves and women.
What abraham lincoln said in gettysburg address
he emphasized the principles of equality, liberty, and reiterated the importance of the united states as a nation that founded these ideals in the declaration of independence. he said that all people were created equal. he also dedicated this speech to the fallen soldiers who died during the battle of gettysburg. reconstruction
This was the period following the civil war that focused on rebuilding the south and bringing the southern states back into the union and integrating enslaved people into society. It also created and defined relationships between whites and african americans (1865-1877). The congress also passed 3 amendments that permanently abolished slavery. Giving slaves citizenship, and voting rights.
Radical Republicans
They were a group of republicans that strongly opposed slavery. they wanted emancipation, to confiscate the land of wealthy white men, allow slaves to fight in the army, equal rights for all, and to punish the south. led by thaddeus stevens
13th amendment
abolished slavery and involuntary servitude in the united states (except as punishment for a crime) 1865 and passed by the congress
14th amendment
granted citizenship to all people born in or naturalized in the united states (including formerly enslaved people) and guaranteed equal protection under the law (1868 passed by senate and congress)
15th amendment
prohibited the federal and state government from denying the rights to vote based on race, color, and previous condition of servitude. this also ensured that african americans could vote. (1870 passed by congress and signed by ulysses s grant.)
