Asexual Reproduction
The process of making new identical cells or single-celled organisms.
Eukaryotic Cells
Cells that have a nucleus and many chromosomes.
Prokaryotic Cells
Cells that do not have a nucleus and typically have one chromosome.
Bacteriophage
A virus that infects and reproduces within bacteria.
Cell Cycle
The series of stages that a cell goes through to grow and divide, including Interphase and M Phase.
Interphase
The phase of the cell cycle that includes G1, S, and G2 stages.
Binary Fission
A form of asexual reproduction in prokaryotic cells where the cell divides into two identical cells.
Lytic Cycle
A viral reproductive cycle that leads to the destruction of the host cell.
Lysogenic Cycle
A viral reproductive cycle that involves integration into the host genome and may remain dormant.
Cancer
Malfunctions in cell cycle checkpoints that can lead to uncontrolled cell growth.
Antibiotics
Substances that can prevent or kill bacteria, used in medical treatments.
Zone of Inhibition
The area around an antibiotic disc where bacteria cannot grow, indicating the effectiveness of the antibiotic.
Plasmids
Extra chromosomal DNA found in prokaryotic cells that can be used for genetic engineering.
Cell Size and Division
Cells divide to maintain an efficient size for metabolic processes.
