Cardiothoracic Surgery
A surgical specialty that includes procedures of the respiratory system and thoracic cavity, excluding those that involve the heart and cardiac vessels.
Cardiovascular-Cardiac Surgery
A surgical specialty encompassing heart procedures and associated great vessels performed to treat acquired or congenital diseases.
Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS)
A procedure used for 80% to 90% of respiratory system procedures performed without painful muscle-splitting incisions.
Thoracic long instruments
General surgery instruments with shanks that must be at least 9inches (22.5cm) for most adult patients.
Bronchus clamps
Large, right-angle clamps with stippled jaws used to occlude the primary bronchi.
Median Sternotomy
A partial or full midline incision made through the sternum, primarily used in cardiac surgery.
Mini-Thoracotomy
A 2−inch (5−cm) right or left incision made between the ribs for access during minimally invasive and robotic procedures.
Coronary bypass graft prep
A skin preparation that includes a full anterior body prep and peripheral limb prep for access to saphenous and axillary veins.
Lukens trap
A specific specimen container used to collect bronchial washings.
Decortication of the lung
A surgical procedure that removes fibrinous deposits on the visceral and parietal pleura.
Right lung
The lung that is anatomically composed of three lobes.
Left lung
The lung that is anatomically composed of two lobes.
Superior chest tube
A drain placed in the chest to facilitate the removal of air.
Inferior chest tube
A drain placed in the chest to facilitate the removal of blood or fluid.
Blebs
Thin-wall air sacs found on the apex of the lung.
Heparin
A medication mixed with saline irrigation for use during cardiovascular procedures.
Papaverine hydrochloride
A medication used during surgical procedures for its antispasmodic effect on the vessels.
Fibrillation
An involuntary muscle contraction similar to quivering.
