Medical Practice Acts
Rules and regulations for physicians and other providers passed by each state.
State Statutes
Define the practice of medicine, describe methods of licensure, and set guidelines for suspension or revocation of a license.
USMLE
United States Medical Licensing Examination, required by all states before allowing a physician to practice.
CMEs
Continuing Medical Education, required to renew a medical license.
Unprofessional Conduct

Chronic substance abuse, severe physical limitations preventing adequate care, or practicing outside the scope of training; grounds for license revocation or suspension.
NPI Number
A 10-digit number used for prescribing medications and submitting claims to insurance companies.
Drug Formulary
A list of drugs covered by an insurance policy or available at a specific price (e.g., $4 prescriptions).
E-prescribing
Electronic prescribing, reduces costs by increasing compliance with formularies and the use of generic medications.
DEA
Mandates strict regulations on writing prescriptions for narcotics.
Script Doctor
A provider known for writing excessive prescriptions, often for controlled substances.
Picture ID (Clinic Policy)
Required to verify the correct name and match the name to the face when checking into a clinic.
Provider Responsibilities (Controlled Substances)
Seeing the client on a regular basis before refills are given, and requiring a picture ID to pick up narcotic prescriptions.
HIPAA
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, protects the integrity of individuals' identifiable health information.
PHI
Protected Health Information, all individually identifiable health information protected by HIPAA.

Aims to make health care available to as many Americans as possible and puts consumers in charge of their health coverage and care.
