limited war- a war fought with restricted goals, avoiding total destruction, does not require full mobilization of a country or economy
total war- war that affects all aspects of society (economy, politica, military and civillians) there is no distinction between combatants and civillians, cities and infastructure are all targeted
was ww1 avoidable?
ww1 was a knock on effect by worsened by alliances, World War I was highly likely given the complex interplay of factors present in Europe at the time. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the spark, but the tinderbox was already built, according to many historians.

what is a naval blockade
a military or naval effort to prevent goods or weapons from reaching a specific area.
in this case the Us tried to stop soviet missile shipments, this was a non violent but forceful action that escalated the crisis while avoiding direct attack.
Mutual assured destruction
a cold war doctrine where both sides had enough nuclear weapons to destroy eachother. this prevented direct war as botj the USA and USSR knew it would result in total destruction
trade embargo
a ban on trade within a particular country, in this case the Us imposed a trade embargo onto cuba after caestro’s communist revolution. this only increased tension and pushed cuba to rely on the soviet union for support
