How to Form Evaluative Statements?
ASSERTION
a statement used to make a declaration or to express strong belief on a particular topic.
FACT, CONVENTION, OPINION, PREFERENCE
Common Types of Assertion:
FACT
A statement that can be proven objectively by direct experiences, testimonies of witness or verified observations.
CONVENTION
A statement that can be verified reference to historical precedent, laws, rules or usage; may be in dictionaries and encyclopedias.
OPINION
Based on facts, but is difficult to objectively verify because of the uncertainty of producing satisfactory proofs of soundness.
PREFERENCE
Based on personal choice; therefore, they are subjective and cannot be objectively proven or logically attacked.
CLAIM (MAIN ARGUMENT)
is a sentence that summarizes the most important thing that the writer wants to say as a result of his/her thinking, reading or writing.
CLAIM
persuades, argues, convinces, proves, or provocatively suggests something to a reader who may or may not initially agree with you.
ARGUMENTATIVE AND DEBATABLE, SPECIFIC AND FOCUSED, INTERESTING AND ENGAGING, LOGICAL
Characteristics of a Good Claim:
WHAT IS THE AUTHOR’S MAIN POINT? WHAT IS THE AUTHOR’S POSITION REGARDING IT?
Determining the Writers Claim:
OPINION
supported by more opinion.
CLAIM
Supported by evidence which can be debated or challenged addresses the “SO WHAT?” question.
CLAIM
Is a statement that is not considered accepted by all.
CLAIMS OF FACT, CLAIMS OF VALUE, CLAIMS OF POLICY
Three kinds of Claims:
CLAIMS OF FACT
Relate to the statement that can be verified, relies on factual information for support. Not dependent on person’s preference but can be true or false.
CLAIMS OF VALUE
Are evaluative statements. Statements which is better, more important, more desirable, more needed or more useful.
CLAIMS OF POLICY
All about what should be. Suggest a solution to a problem. Advocates adoption of policies or courses of action.
DENOTATION
is the primary, explicit and literal definition of a word. Meaning comes from dictionary.
CONNOTATION
secondary meaning of a word. Meaning comes from how people understand a word based on their own personal and consensual experiences.
