Joints
Places where bones meet, allowing movement, stability, and growth.
Synarthrosis
No movement.
Amphiarthrosis
Little movement.
Diarthrosis
Lots of movement.
Fibrous joints
Very tight joints with no movement (e.g., skull, teeth).
Cartilaginous joints
Joints held together with bendy cartilage (e.g., spine, ribs meeting chest).
Synovial Joints
Joints with a space called the joint cavity, containing synovial fluid for smooth movement.
Synovial fluid
Like lotion for joints helps move smooth.
Uniaxial
Movement in one way (like the elbow).
Biaxial
Movement in two ways (like fingers).
Multiaxial
Movement in three ways (like the shoulder).
Flexion/Extension
Bending and stretching.
Abduction/Adduction
Move away/toward.
Rotation
Turning.
Plane joint
Flat bones sliding (like hand bones).
Hinge joint
Open/close like a door (elbow).
Pivot joint
Turn side to side (neck).
Ball-and-socket
Big wiggly joint (shoulder, hip).
Unhappy triad
Three parts of the knee that can get hurt together.
Dislocated shoulder
Arm bone out of joint.
Total replacement
Both parts of the hip are replaced.
Partial replacement
Only one part of the hip is replaced.
Supination
Palm up like holding soup.
Abduction
Taking limb away.
Adduction
Adding limb back to the body.
Range of motion
How far a joint moves.
