Somatic vs Sex Cells
somatic cells are diploids and have two sets of each chromosome while sex cells are only sperm and egg cells
What are homologous chromosomes
two of the same chromosomes coming together to share DNA, one is from mom and the other, from dad
outcomes of meiosis
genetic reduction, genetic recombination
Interphase
same as mitosis in somatic cells
Prophase I
same as in mitosis, except the chromosomes group into TETRADS and synapsis occurs
Metaphase I
tetrads line up in the middle of the cell and the spindle fibres begin to form, independent assortment occurs
Anaphase I
singular chromosomes are pulled apart by the spindle fibres and are now normal chromosomes (not tetrads), the centromeres are still present
Telophase I
two non-identical nuclei are present, and now the cell is a haploid
