medicines that fight bacterial infections by killing or keeping bacteria from reproducing
Antisepsis
to reduce or prevent the spread of infection
Bacteria
single celled organisms classified by their shape and arrangement, they can be round, rod, or spiral.
Example: escherichia coli
Body mechanics
positions and movements used to maintain proper posture and avoid muscle and bone injuries.
Contagion
Disease spread by direct or indirect contact
Fomite
non-living material that can house microorganisms.
Fungi
a plant-like organism that can be responsible for producing illness. Examples are Athlete’s Foot or yeast infections
Immunity
The condition of being immune to a pathogen, the protection against infection through an immune response by previous injection or infection
SDS
a document that describes the safe use, handling, and protocols for emergencies for a chemical substance. Safety Data Sheet
Microorganisms
Tiny living plants or animals that can only be seen with the aid of a microscope.
Pathogen
An agent that causes disease especially in a living organism such as bacteria, virus, or fungus.
Personal Protective Equipment
equipment worn by healthcare workers to protect themselves and others from pathogens (ex. glove, gowns, masks, and face shields)
Standard Precautions
guidelines to prevent the spread of disease

CPR
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation; is an emergency lifesaving procedure performed when the heart stops beating.
AED
Automated External Defibrillator; lightweight, portable device that can identify lethal heart rhythms and deliver a shock to terminate the abnormal rhythm and allow the heart’s normal rhythm to resume.
Defibrillation
the stopping of fibrillation of the heart by administering a controlled electric shock in order to allow restoration of the normal rhythm.
Sudden Cardiac Arrest
Occurs when the heart develops an abnormal rhythm and cannot pump blood to the rest of the body.
Heart Attack
occurs when blood flow to part of the heart muscle is blocked by a clot.
Agonal Gasps
gasping that people do when they're struggling to breathe because of cardiac arrest or another serious medical emergency.
Chest Recoil
Allowing the chest to fully expand so that blood can refill the heart chambers between compressions.
Ventricular Fibrillation (VF)
The heart’s electrical activity becomes disordered causing the heart muscles to quiver in a fast, unsynchronized way so the heart does not pump blood.
Respiratory Arrest
occurs when normal breathing stops, preventing essential oxygen supply and carbon dioxide exchange.
Cyanosis
Blue discoloration caused by low oxygen levels in the red blood cells or problems getting oxygenated blood to your body.
First Aid
the immediate care that you give to a person with an illness or injury before rescuers with more advanced training arrive and take over.
