Trichology

The study and care of hair, derived from the Greek words trichos ("hair") and logy ("study of").

Integumentary system

The body system that consists of the hair, skin, and nails.

Hair shaft

The portion of a human hair strand that projects above the epidermis.

Hair root

The portion of the hair located below the surface of the epidermis.

Hair follicle

The tube-like depression or pocket in the skin or scalp that anchors the hair root.

Hair bulb

The lowest part of a hair strand, containing cells that will form the hair.

Dermal papilla

A small, cone-shaped elevation located at the base of the hair follicle that allows the hair to grow.

Arrector pili muscle

The small, involuntary muscle located near or at the base of the hair follicle.

Sebaceous glands

Glands in the skin that secrete sebum, an oily substance.
