You are working as an assistant on a laboratory research project involving tamarin monkeys. While reviewing the notes for the project, you snack on grapes. One of the tamarins is watching you intensely from its cage and is gesturing for you to give it a grape. What should you do?
a. refrain from giving it a grape
b. give it just one grape
c. check reputable sources online to verify that grapes are safe for tamarins

A research team is working on developing a treatment for a highly contagious virus that has been shown to affect rodents, canines, and horses. Scientists believe there is a significant chance that, sometime in the next few years, the virus would mutate into a form that affects humans. The research team is currently testing mice that have been infected with the virus, and everyday, the lab animal technician feeds the mice, changes their bedding, and monitors their general health. The mice are fed a commercial pellet diet on paper plates, but due to the effects of the virus, many have a decreased appetite and often do not finish all of their food. The leftovers and the paper plates are collected after meals and thrown into trash bags with any soiled bedding material. The trash bags are then placed on the ground in a designated area outside the building, where they are picked up twice a week by the trash collection service. The lab is located in a semi-rural setting with significant wildlife in the surrounding area. Are the lab animal technician's actions appropriate, and why or why not?

The lab animal technician is not following an appropriate protocol for disposing of the waste collected from the mice's cages. These materials may be contaminated with the virus that is being studied, and by leaving them outside for several days at a time in an area known to have wildlife increases the likelihood that local animals will get into the trash to eat the leftover food, and in doing so, expose themselves to the virus. Once exposed, they will spread it to other animals in the community.
