Determinism
The scientific emphasis on causal explanation
Hard determinism
No actions/behaviour is free and every human action has a cause
Soft determinism
People’s behaviour is a direct result of the environment- element of free will but is controlled by external factors
Biological determinism
behaviour that’s determined by factors inside ourselves e.g. biological approach
Environmental determinism
Behaviour that’s determined by factors outside ourselves e.g. SLT
Psychic determinism
Unconscious processes are the cause for behaviours e.g. psychodynamic approach
Scientific
Isolates variables to make them easier to understand- allows therapy to be developed- society more willing to accept its findings
Reductionist
Implies behaviour can be predicted- doesn’t account for individual differences- takes away individual responsibility
