Line (Visual Arts)
One of the fundamental elements of art; a continuous mark that can vary in width, direction, and length.
Define Shapes and Form (Use of Line)
Lines outline objects and give them shape and three-dimensional form.
Show Movement (Use of Line)
Directional or dynamic lines guide the viewer’s eye and suggest motion or energy.
Create Texture and Pattern (Use of Line)
Repeated or varied lines simulate surface qualities and decorative motifs.
Horizontal Line
Runs left to right across a surface; often communicates calmness, rest, and stability.
Vertical Line
Extends straight up and down; conveys strength, growth, and dignity.

Curved Line
A smooth, flowing line that bends without sharp angles; suggests grace, fluidity, and softness.
Dotted Line
Composed of small, evenly spaced dots; indicates an implied or temporary connection.
Broken Line
A line with visible gaps or interruptions; evokes fragility, uncertainty, or transition.
