Hemopoiesis
The formation of blood cells, occurring in red bone marrow.
Hemoglobin
Molecules found within the cytosol of erythrocytes (red blood cells) that are responsible for carrying oxygen.
Phagocyte
A specialized type of white blood cell that engulfs and destroys harmful foreign particles; examples include neutrophils, macrophages, and monocytes.
Basophil
The least common type of granulocyte, involved in allergic reactions and inflammation, releasing histamine and heparin.
Thrombopoietin (TPO)
A glycoprotein hormone produced by the liver that regulates platelet production.
Prothrombinase
An enzyme complex that converts prothrombin into thrombin, essential for blood clotting.
Agglutination
The clumping of red blood cells, which can occur if a person receives the wrong blood type.
Hemolysis
The rupture of red blood cells, which can also occur due to incompatible blood transfusions.
